REWE Liederbach: Sustainable supermarket in timber construction
An innovative REWE store was built in Liederbach am Taunus in 2023, setting new standards in sustainable retail as a green building. With a sales area of 1,688 square meters, the store was built in just eleven months and is the first REWE in Germany to be built entirely in CLT (Cross Laminated Timber).
The architecture was designed by Feldmann Architekten GmbH, the structural engineering was planned by FACTOR E GmbH and the construction was carried out by our customer. The use of wood from certified forestry not only enables a fast construction time, but also creates a natural and healthy atmosphere for customers and employees.
The store is equipped with state-of-the-art technology: a photovoltaic system on the roof, heat pumps with natural refrigerant and LED lighting reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent compared to conventional supermarkets. The store also has 108 wide parking spaces for cars, including 8 e-charging stations, as well as bicycle and cargo bike parking spaces.
The range comprises around 20,000 items with a focus on fresh and organic products as well as regional produce. Special highlights include the spacious fruit and vegetable section, a self-service salad bar and a long butcher's counter.
With the store in Liederbach, REWE demonstrates how sustainability, regionality and modern architecture can be successfully combined.
