Timber construction full of sound: the jukebox in the Augsburg gasworks

In the heart of the former gasworks site in Augsburg-Oberhausen a remarkable project was created: the jukebox. This new five-storey building offers a total of 52 band and music rehearsal rooms on a usable area of 2,144 square meters, supplemented by an office floor for the creative industries on the top floor. There is also a lounge and a multifunctional room on the first floor, which serve as meeting points for artists.

One architectural highlight is the two-storey high Loggia in the shape of a funnel-shaped loudspeaker. It serves as Stage for the gasworks site and encourages the artists to exchange ideas and make music together.

The jukebox was built using sustainable timber construction methods. The following were used 425 cubic meters of load-bearing cross-laminated timber wall and ceiling elements. The exterior walls consist of insulated timber frame elements. Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication, the building was completed in just nine months.

The music box not only creates a functional space for musicians, but also makes an architectural statement for sustainable construction and the creative use of historic industrial sites.
